Employers faced with misconduct need to have a consistent process to find out the facts and take appropriate action in a timely manner. Workplace investigations come with a number of pitfalls such as failure to act, not acting quickly enough, not being consistent, not being thorough, not keeping confidence and not being fair, to name a few. HR needs to provide strong guidance to management to ensure that an investigation not only meets its objectives, but  also that it does not create a actionable event in itself.

In this presentation, Laura Miller will explain the techniques and processes for conducting an internal investigation. These processes/techniques include: the initial intake, preparing evidence, preparing for investigation interviews, and developing a conclusion. Additionally, she will discuss what happens when and how to handle external charges that come out of these internal investigations.

Laura Miller has over 15 years in the HR field. Laura is a Senior HR Client Consultant with Ameren and has been with them for nine years. She specializes in internal investigations, HR compliance, external charge responses, absence management and employee relations.  Laura is certified as SHRM-SCP and PHR, and holds a master's degree in HR Management from Webster University. She has also taught HR at the undergraduate level for the University of Illinois-Springfield.  Laura is currently the director of ILSHRM, and has served in many other SHRM volunteer roles including Membership Director and Foundation Director for ILSHRM and President of the Metro East chapter, MEI-SHRM.

This program has been approved for HRCI & SHRM recertification credits.
