The Bermuda Triangle of Employee Leave: FMLA, ADA, and Workers' Compensation

    September 18, 2014
    11:15 am - 1:00 pm
Hickory Stick at Highlands Golf Course 875 Sports Way, Elgin, Illinois 60123
    $20 - members; $25 - member's guests; $40 - non-members

Presented by Sarah Flotte Porter & Kate Goyert

Employee leave would not be as difficult to administer if employers had to apply only one law.  Yet, since the ADA Amendments became effective, a vast majority of employee leave involves the intersection of the FMLA and ADA, which is complicated further if the employee also is seeking workers' compensation leave.  This interactive session is designed to help employers keep their bearings through this Bermuda Triangle of employee leave by giving employers the tools to determine when leave is appropriate and how to handle employees returning from leave.

Sarah Flotte Porter is a member of Michael Best’s Labor and Employment Relations Group, focusing on employment counseling and litigation. Ms. Porter’s practice involves defending employers in state and federal litigation, as well as before administrative agencies. Her representative experience includes issues related to: discrimination; harassment; retaliation and whistleblowers; employee leave; reductions-in-force; employee handbooks and policies; affirmative action; breach of contract; defamation; wage and hour disputes; and covenants not to compete.  Ms. Porter has been recognized as a “Rising Star” (2012, 2013), by Super Lawyers.  Ms. Porter also was selected for inclusion in “The Top Women Attorneys in Illinois” (2013), by Super Lawyers.

Kate Goyert is a member of the firm’s Labor and Employment Relations Group, focusing on employment counseling and litigation. Kate’s practice includes defending employers in federal, state, and administrative litigation. Her representative experience includes issues related to: discrimination, harassment, retaliation, employee leave, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Family and Medical Leave Act, employee handbooks and policies, and severance and separation agreements
