January 2012 - What you missed - General Meeting Recap

If you missed our January meeting, you really missed valuable information.  Steve Teplinsky was our presenter, and he discussed the increase in employment law settlements over the last couple of years.  Evidently, not only have discrimination settlements increased, but so have retaliation claims at an alarming rate.  All rose in 2010 (most recent stats available), with retaliation claims leading the pack.  The average settlement amount is over $200,000.

To combat retaliation charges, Steve discussed several steps an employer must take.  Protected activities were discussed at length and how to discipline and/or terminate an employee who has engaged in a protected activity was explained.
